#VH CITY GUIDE: VENICE

It is very rare that I get to visit, which I haven't visited before. Most of the time I am flying to "fashion" capitals like Paris, London and Milan, yet I am really happy that I got the chance to visit a new Italian city a couple of weeks ago - which was Venice. This was my first time in the city and since a lot of you wrote me that you have this city on your bucket list as well, I decided to write a little guide for you, where you can find some tips on what to see, where to eat or where to shop at!

ABOUT THE CITY

Venice is a small city located in the north of Italy. Famous it is for its unique location on water - until just 100 years ago, the city used to be an island, before there was built a bridge connecting it to the land. In the city there is only about 50 000 people living, yet there are masses of tourists coming every season. One thing you might want to know about the city, the transportation is extremely expensive. As for a water taxi ride, you'll pay around 120 euros from the airport to the city center, one way. If you decide to use the public transportation, you'll have to pay 7.50 euros for one ride, no matter how long you're going to be going. You should be also careful about pocket thieves, which you might find a lot in Venice. One more advice that I can give you - pack light. In Venice you'll find a lot of bridges with a lot stairs, and trust me - carrying your 23 kilos heavy suitcase through 6 of those is HELL.

SIGHTSEEING

- Ponte di Rialto: Ponte di Rialto is one of the 4 bridges built over the Grand Canal. It's one of the most famous bridges in Venice and around it you might find a lot of stores, restaurants and cafés. Make sure to chill near the bridge with a glass of wine and some delicious Italian snack, while enjoying the atmosphere of the city!
- The Canals: When in Venice, you can't miss a gondola ride through the Canals! This is absolutely a must-do! You can find many options - a private ride, a shared ride or a ride with a violin player or a bottle of champagne. These rides are ridiculously expensive, yet definitely worth it. I am pretty sure you'll find the one for you!
- Piazza & Basilica San Marco: One of the most famous places of Venice is the Pizza San Marco where you can also find the famous Basilica San Marco. This square is very, very expensive. A simple coffee can cost up to 30 euros, yet it's simply worth it.
- Burano: Burano is a small island, about 45 minutes away with a boat ride. You can easily access the island with a public boat, where a return ticket will cost you 15 euros. In Burano you'll find many cute, colourful houses, many boats, local restaurants and small shops. The best to visit is actually early in the morning or later in the afternoon, since there is a lot of tourists coming and visiting.

- The Canals: Každý, kdo se chystá do Benátek, by měl povinně alespoň jednou zažít cestu gondolou. Vybrat si můžete z několika možností - privátní gondoly, gondoly s proseccem, sdílené gondoly i gondoly s živou hudbu.

PLACE TO STAY

- Hotel Palazzo Barbarigo: As our home away from home we chose the amazing 4-star Hotel Palazzo Barbarigo, which is located directly on the main canal and offers a great view on the Grand Canal. In this small, hidden hotel you'll find only about 18 rooms and staying at Palazzo Barbarigo feels like a true home. The staff is being very friendly and helpful. In the hotel you'll find also a bar, where you can also find the famous terrace from my first picture. It's definitely something to sit down there, drink a glass and watch the sunset over the Canal. If I would come back to Venice, I would definitely choose this hotel again!

FOOD & DRINKS

- The Gritti Terrace: The Gritti Terrace can be found inside of the amazing 5-star hotel called The Gritti Palace. This place I can recommend for a drink with a view because it offers the most gorgeous view the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Salute, the Grand Canal and the gondolas. I personally wouldn't recommend eating there, as the food quality isn't that great in comparison with the price charged.
- Gelatoteca Suso: When in Italy, you absolutely have to try their gelato! My best advice is to go to the Gelatoteca Suso, which you've probably seen already all over Instagram. In this place you actually have to stand a line and there is a good reason for it - the gelato tastes amazing and the prices are not over the top.
- Ristorante Mario Alla Fava: If you're a fan of fish and seafood dishes, you definitely need to try this a little hidden place, located in the heart of the city. Here you actually get served what you expected for the price and the place isn't over-crowded!
- Osteria Al Portego: This is a small, local place where you can get the real taste of Venice. In the little restaurant you'll be able to find many traditional dishes, a lot of good wine and a lot of local people!

- The Gritti Terrace: The Gritti Terrace je restaurace, kterou najdete v luxusním, 5-i hvězdičovém hotelu The Gritti Palace.

SHOPPING

- Calle Larga 22 Marzo: Salizada San Moise is a long street where you can find several luxury stores, including brands like Gucci, Prada or Dolce&Gabbana.

- T Fondaco dei Tedeschi: This new shopping mall can be found near the Ponte di Rialto and inside you'll have more then 5 floors full of designer clothing, accessories and cosmetics. Also, please don't forget to take a look at their terrace right on the roof, from which you can see the whole city from a completely new perspective!

  1. My family and I have been trying to get to Venice for a while now! Since I am part Italian, it's always a good opportunity to practice my Italian speaking skills ... and they're in need of desperate work too ;) All these places seem great and based off the photos and how you described them, it seems like we just cannot miss them! I will definitely look into the hotel as a place to stay, and we will have to get to the gelato shop! Thank you for the warning about the transportation fare and pocket thiefs! I didn't know either those things about Venice and it's good to know them before you get there 'D! I'm glad you had such a wonderful time!
