#VHCITYGUIDE: CANCÚN, TULUM & YUCATAN

IMG_8171

As you know, a couple of weeks ago I've been to  Cancún, Mexico. This was actually my 8th (!!) time visiting this area, which I think gives me the right and experience to write down a little guide with tips where to eat, where to shop and what to see in Cancún, and the near-by area (Playa del Carmen and Tulum). If you, yourself, have any tips or places worth visiting, please share them in the comments section below!

BASIC INFORMATION

- As you probably know, Cancún and the near-by area is a famous and popular vacay-destination. Located in the Mexican peninsula "Yucatán", Cancún is the biggest city in the state Quintana Roo, operating international flights. If you are looking for a combination of city and beach, then is Cancún perfect for you - there is bars, clubs, shopping bars and restaurants in the city. However if you are looking for more relaxing kind of vacation, then book a stay in the area near Playa del Carmen or Tulum, which is way more relaxing and calm. The ride there from Cancún is about 45 - 60 minutes.
- The weather in Cancún is nice all year long, however there are two periods I would avoid: the first one is the hurricane season, starting in June and ending in November. Even though you might find a good deal, the risk is simply not worth it - I've experienced a hurricane 1st scale there and the weather was bad for about 3 days, which is kind of a lot. The second period I would skip is the spring-break, which is in April and October. As you know Americans love to celebrate their college holidays there, so if you don't wanna spend your days pool partying, listening to loud music or handle drunk party-monsters in their mid-20s, then avoid this season.
- the official Mexican currency is Mexican pesos. There is a lot of exchanges in the city (never exchange at the airport). Also you don't have to be worried if you don't speak Spanish - everybody is international and speaks also English (at least in the malls or in Cancún)

Pokud nemluvíte španělsky, nemusíte mít strach - v hotelech, obchodech i v resturacích všichni mluví anglicky.

SIGHTS & PLACES

- Las Coloradas: This place is not that famous within the tourists, maybe because it's 3.5 hours away from Cancún, however it's really worth seeing. How many times in your life do you get to see a pink lake? The nature at Las Coloradas feels like a dream and the pink-orange-ist lake are unbelievable! There are a few organized trips going there, however what I recommend to do is to rent a car and drive by yours - that way you can also discover some of the little towns, like Valladolid!
- Chitzen Itza: This place belongs to the 7 new wonders. This old and historical place makes you feel like you're back in the Mayan era and also teaches you something about the history of Mayas and Mexico!
- Coba: Coba is an old, ancient city with lot of historical places. In the small city you can find many smaller "pyramides" and also learn about the Mexican history.
- Xelhá: If you love nature and would like to see something more from it, then you definitely need to visit this natural aquarium and lagoon. Besides dreamy blue lagoons, you'll find many restaurants and attractions in the park - for example swimming with dolphins, sea diving, snorkeling, swimming with manatees, stingray interaction, a cave tour, a spa, and many many more!
- Xcararet: Another park worth visiting is Xcaret. I liked Xelhá more, however this eco-park is also  really nice. This place is more focused on the history of the country - in the park you can find several chapels, a Mayan village, a Mexican Cemetery and a Mexican vine cellar. Of course, you can also enjoy the sun and water and book some extra activities - like a dolphin ride, swimming with sharks or stingray encounter!
- La Isla Mujeres: La Isla Mujeres is an island about 13 kilometers away from the peninsula Yucatán. There is a regular ferry going to the island, which you can take in Cancun. In the east you'll find more rocky surface, however in the westside there is a clear water. Besides sea and beaches, you can eat locally in one of their small restaurants, enjoy a margarita on the beach-side or go buy some souvenirs!
- Playa del Carmen: This small city, about 1 hour away from Cancún, is also a very nice place to visit. The town is smaller than Cancún, however full of shop - local and international -, restaurants and bars! If you are near-by, definitely make a stop there!

MÍSTA & PAMÁTKY

- Las Coloradas: Tohle místo není žádnou turistickou památkou a moc lidí v Las Coloradas nenajdete.
- Xelhá: Pokud jste milovníke přírody, nemůžete si nechat ujjít přírodní lagunu a rezervaci "Xelhá".

CAFES & RESTAURANTS

- La Cabana: I have already told you in one of my posts from Mexico, that my favourite restaurant there was the "Cabana" at the Ritz-Carlton Cancun. This is the only hotel in Cancún providing this kind of experience and for me, this was a dinner I would love to do again. The dinner is set at the beach, which gives you the perfect view on the sea and the beautiful sunset. The food served in the Cabanas is the best of the best sea food, steaks and also vegetarian-food, so this is a real win-win for everyone.
- Raw Love Tulum: One of the best vegan places in Tulum is Raw Love Tulum. This place offers everything from Acai Bowls, over smoothies to coconuts filled with fruits! If you are going to Tulum, you definitely have to go this place!
- Thai Lounge: If you are a fan of thai food and restaurants, this is the number one place for you! The restaurant is actually one of the most romantic settings in Cancún, where you can enjoy a great dinner with an amazing view.
- Fred's House Seafood Market & Grill: Another amazing location with a great view over the sea. The menu has a great selection of seafood, chicken, beef and chef's specialities.
- The Club Grill: Located, again, in the Ritz-Carlton, the Club Grill is the IT place for a classical Sunday brunch. The place is famous all over Cancún, offering the best from international and Mexican cuisine.

SHOPPING

- Luxury Avenue: When it comes to luxury shopping in Cancun, there are not many malls with luxury brands. One of the best luxury shopping malls is the Luxury Avenue, where you can find brands like Cartier, Bulgari, Burberry, Fendi or Salvatore Ferragamo. All stores are located under one roof, which is nice if you don't want to deal with the hot temperatures.
- Fashion Harbour: Another shopping mall offering luxury brands is the Fashion Harbour, which is a part of the La Isla. In this mall you can find stores like Dolce & Gabbana, Saint Laurent, Prada or Louis Vuitton.
- La Isla: If you are looking for more "affordable" international brands, go to La Isla. Zara, Tommy Hilfiger, Lacoste, Starbucks, Victoria's Secret or Haagen-Dazs is one of the many stores, which you can find in the opened shopping mall.

- La Isla: Pokud hledáte dostupnější značky, zajděte do La Isly. Tam najdete značky jako Zara, Tommy Hilfiger, Lacoste, Starbucks, Victoria's Secret nebo například Haagen-Dazs.
