#VH CITY GUIDE: PUERTO RICO

Puerto Rico is a popular vacation destination in the Caribbean. The island, which belongs to the US territory, is visited by tourist from all over the world. As you know, I have spent in Puerto Rico two amazing weeks and today I would like to give you some tips regarding visiting the island. Which places are worth seeing? Where to go for a good bite? And what to avoid? Everything (and more) you'll know in this guide! Also, as always, if you, yourself, have any tips or recommendations, you are more than welcome to share those!

Puerto Rico, česky Portoriko, je oblíbenou dovolenkovou destinací v Karibiku. Ostrov, který patří k území USA, ročně navštíví několik desítek milionů turistů. Jak už asi víte, my jsme v Puertu Ricu strávili krásných 16 dní. Dneska jsem se rozhodla sepsat malou "guide" s tipy a radami ohledně ostrova. Co stojí za to vidět? Kam zajít na dobrou večeři? A čemu se radši vyhnout? To se všechno dozvíte, pokud budete číst dál! Pokud Vy sami máte nějaké tipy a rady ohledně Purta Rica, budu moc ráda, pokud je budete sdílet v komentářích! 

BASIC INFORMATION

As mentioned in the introduction, Puerto Rico is a small island in the Caribbean, which belongs to the US (which means that you are required to travel there with an ESTA or Visa). If you arrive into the country, most likely you will be at the International Airport in San Juan, which is the capital of the island. On the 9 100 square kilometers big island there are ca. 4 million people living. The currency is, just like in the US, the US Dollar. The official language is English, however Spanish dominates on the island - however everyone can speak English, you don't have to be worried about to being able to understand or to talk. As in the whole Caribbean, also in Puerto Rico there are two seasons - rain season and a dry season. The rain season begins in May and ends in November - we went to Puerto Rico in August and experienced only 3 rainy days out of 17, so even if you choose to go in a rainy season, you don't have to be scared it will be raining the whole time. As you know, we have stayed at the Ritz-Carlton San Juan and the Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve. The hotel in the city is great choice if you want to explore a little bit and some days just chill at the beach. The Dorado Beach property is a true paradise, which lets you fully relax and enjoy your days off. We split our days on the island between the hotel in San Juan (6 nights) and the one in Dorado (9 nights), which I can only recommend!

Puerto Rico je jeden z mnoha ostrovů v Karibiku. Od většiny se ale liší tím, že je součástí území USA - to znamená, že jeho obytavelé mají americké občasntví a ty jako turista potřebujete ESTA nebo vízum. Hlavní městem ostova je San Juan a na celém ostrově žije cca. 4 miliony lidí. Měna je stejá jako v USA, tudíž americký dolar. Oficiálním jazykem je angličtina, ale věšina obyvatelstva mluví španělsky - všichni ale umí anglicky, takže se nemusíte bát, že byste se nedoruzumněli. Jako v celém Karibiku, i Puerto Rica má 2 roční období: a to období dešťů, které začíná v květnu a končí v listopadu, a období sucha. My jsme se do Puerto Rica vydali v srpnu, a z 17 dnů, které jsme na ostrově strávili, nám propršely jen 3 dny. Ubytování jsme si rozdělili do dvou hotelů: jako první jsme strávili 6 nocí v Ritz-Carlton San Juan a prozkoumali tak první část ostrova v okolí San Juanu. Pak jsme se přestěhovali do Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, kde jsme strávili dalších 9 nocí a především relaxovali. Myslím, že takhle se toho dá stihnout víc a proto bych toto rozdělení mohla jen doporučit!

SIGHTS & PLACES

- Old San Juan: The Old City of San Juan, in Spanish "Viejo San Juan", is a part of the capital full of small, colorful houses, little shops, many restaurants, cafés and bars. To me, this is was without any doubts definitely my favourite part of San Juan. You can easily walk through this part of the city within an hour and enjoy the beauty of the city! Also, there is a big promenade at the sea, which offers an incredible view over the sea and the island!
- El Yunque: The national rainforest is a true experience for anyone, who has never been to one (just like me). In the park you can learn about the country's flora and fauna (and see all the trees, flowers, plants and animals on your own). In the park you can also visit one of their 25 waterfalls and enjoy a swim there while being surrounded with beautfiul nature. The park's most famous are La Mina, La Coca and Las Pailas. The park is located just about 20 minute ride from San Juan, and a 45 minute ride from Dorado Beach.
- Castillo San Felipe del Moro: Another sight located in San Juan is the historical Castle. The building, located at the end of the headland of San Juan, teaches you about the island's history and culture, while offering a great view over the sea, the island and the city.
- Culebra & Vieques: Puerto Rico is not just the main island, there are a lot of small islands, which are a apart of the country as well. One of those small islands are Culebra and Vieques, which are reachable by a ferry (about 3-4 hours journey) or a small plane (about 30 minutes flights). On both islands you can enjoy a walk on one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico, swim in clear, turquoise water, grab a drink at one of their many bars or get snack at a local restaurant. If you decided to go to one of those islands, I highly recommend to book a hotel there and stay for at least 2 days.
- Flamenco Beach: One of the most beautiful beaches on the main island is the Flamenco Beach. This is a public beach, on which you can find white sand and clear water. On the side, there are many apartments available for rent (mostly though Airbnb), many shops, bars and restaurants.
- Mosquito Bay: Another place, which I would like to mention, is the Mosquito Bay (Vieques), which is a very unique and special place. This bay has been officially declared the brightest recorded in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records in 2008. The bioluminescent water can be experienced only in the New Moon Phase, however is something really special and unseen - so if you are planning a trip to Vieques, you should also visit the Mosquito Bay!

- Staré Město San Juanu: Staré Město hlavního města San Juan, v originálu "Viejo San Juan", byla část města, kterou jsem si zamilovala. Všude najdete krásné, barevné domy, spoustu restaurací a barů, lokální obchody a příjemnou atmosféru. Celou čtvrť stihnete projít ani ne za hodinu. U moře pak najdete dlouhou promenádu, ze které krásně vidíte na moře i na celý ostrov. 
- El Yunque: El Yunque je deštný prales a zároveň jeden z největších parků v celém USA. Leží cca. 20 minut od San Juanu a 45 minut od Dorado Beach. V parku se můžete dozvědět něco víc o místní flóře a fauně (a také ji vidět na živo), a také se vykoupat v jednom z 25 vodopádů. Nejslavnější a nejnavštěvovanější jsou La Mina, La Coca a Las Pailas - doporučuji do parku ale vyjet co nejdříve, aby jste se vyhly návalu turistů u vodopádů.
- Castillo San Felipe del Moro: Tento hrad byl v San Juanu vybudován již v 16.století. V hradu se můžete dozvědět o historii města i celého Puerto Rica, a zároveň si užít krásný výhled na moře a ostrov.
- Culebra & Vieques: K Puerto Ricu patří kromě "hlavního ostrova" také menší ostrůvky, na které se dostanete buď lodí (cca. 3-4 hodiny) nebo menším letadlem (cca. 45 minut letu). Ty, co opravdu stojí za vidění, jsou Culebra a Vieques. Na obouch ostrovech najdete ty nejhezší pláže v celém Puerto Ricu, průzračnou vodu, spoustu lokálních barů a restaurací u pláže. Pokud se rozhodnete na jeden z ostrovů jet, doporučuji si na něm zabookovat hotel alespoň na jednu noc, jinak si výlet moc neužijete.
- Flamenco Beach: Jedna z pláží na hlavním ostrově, kterou byste "měli" vidět, je Flamenco Beach. Jedná se o veřejnou pláž, která turisty (i místní) láká svým bílým pískem, tyrkysovou vodou, bary a restauracemi. 
- Mosquito Bay: Jedno z nevšedním míst najdete na již zmiňovaém ostrově Vieques - jedná se o luminiscentní zátoku, která byla v roce 2008 Guinnessovou knihou označena za nejjasnější vodu na světě. Luminiscentní vodu můžete vidět v první fázi měsíce, ale rozhodně stojí za to, pokud se na Vieques vydáte.

CAFES & RESTAURANTS

- BLT Steak: Located in the Ritz-Carlton in San Juan, the BLT Steak was a true experience for me. They have several locations all over the US, Caribbean and Asia. This was my first visit of BLT and definitely not the last. Even though I am not a person, who would eat meat since I am a pescetarian, however they have a lot of fish, vegetables and vegetarian dishes on the menu, which were delicious. Of course, if you do love meat and enjoy eating, this is the right place to eat sine that was the "best steak in our whole stay", quoting my boyfriend. And trust me, he tried a lot of steaks on our holiday!

- Himalaya Ice Cream: This small ice cream place is located in the Old City of San Juan. They have the best rolled, home-made ice cream in the town! You can choose from several options, or if you are not happy with those, you can also make your own! I took the acai-berry ice cream and my boyfriend went for a cookie-chocolate one - they both tasted like heaven!

- Starbene Café: This small, Italian café, where you can enjoy breakfast, a cup of coffee, cakes, gelato, ice cream and many many more. I was in the café for breakfast and the food tasted really amazing. I got to try the eggs, the bean-avocado salad, the pancakes and a lot of mimosas. The places is really nice and really relaxing, which is the perfect start into a shopping day! 

- Positivo Sand Bar: This restaurant and bar is located at the main pool in Dorado Beach and offers the best from Japanese cuisine. As a big sushi lover and fan, this was the right place for me. We got many sushi rolls, which very really beyond tasty, especially with a combination with their rosé. From the restaurant you can overlook the sea and the beach, which is especially nice during the sunset (which has insane colours at Dorado!).

- La Parilla: This cute restaurant, located at the beachside, is located just a few minutes from the National Rainforest Park El Yunque. They are famous for their exquisite seafood with a Puerto-Rican twist. They use only fresh ingredients and every dish is made freshly. This was one of my favourite places during our stay!

-BLT Steak: BLT je jedna z restaurací v hotelu Ritz-Carlton San Juan. Její lokace najdete po celém USA, Karibiku a Asii. Přestože jím jen ryby a mořské plody, ve steakhousu se mi moc líbilo. Menu mají bohaté jak na maso, tak právě i na rybí, zeleninové a vegetariánské pokrmy. Samozřejmě pokud milujete maso, BLT Steak si užijete na maximum. Podle přítele v BLT jedl "ten nejlepší steak za celou dovolenou" - a věřte mi, že jich tam pár ochutnal..

- Himalaya Ice Cream: Tuto malou zmrzlinárku najdete ve Starém Městě San Juanu. Jedná se o tkz. "rolovanou, domácí zmrzlinu", která chutná božsky. Já jsem si dala kombinaci lesních plodů s acai a přítel zvolil čokoládu s cookies - oboje chutnalo skvěle.

- Starbene Café: Tuto malou, útulnou kavárnu najdete v Mall of San Juan. Vychutnat si můžete snídani, oběd i menší "snack" a nebo něco sladkého s výhledem na moře a zbytek ostrova.

- Positivo Sand Bar: V Dorado Beach jsme měli tu příležitost vyzkoušet většinu hotelových restaurací. Místo, které nás zaujalo, byl Positivo Sand Bar, ve kterém si můžete vychutnat klasické asijské a japonské pokrmy. Já osobně zbožňuji sushi, takže jsem se v Positivu cítila jako v nebi. Ochutnali jsme celkem 4 rolky a každá z nich byla opravdu vynikající. Restaurace je také skvěle položená - přímo z ní koukáte přímo na moře, takže pokud se do ní někdy dostanete, doporučuji bookovat v době západu slunce.

- La Parilla: La Parilla je menší restaurace, kterou najdete jen pár minut od nacionálního parku a deštného pralesa "El Yunque". Postavená je přímo u pláže a známá je především pro svoje čerstvě připravené, rybí pokrmy. Mně samotnou opravdu nadchla - dress code řešit nemusíte, jídlo bylo vynikající a všechny suroviny čerstvé. Za mě 1*.

SHOPS & STORES

- Mall of San Juan: This is the newest and the most luxurious mall in the island. The Mall has about 100 stores and restaurants, and carries many local and international brands like Saks 5th Avenue, Tory Burch, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Stuart Weitzman, Nordstrom, etc. Besides the stores, in the mall you can find many restaurants and cafés as well (like the Starbene Café, which I already mentioned). The Mall of San Juan is opened everyday from 9 am till 10 am. 

- Mall of San Juan: Mall of San Juan je nejluxusnějším nákupním centrem na celém ostrově. Najdete v něm více jak 100 obchodů, včetně značek jako je Nordstrom, Saks 5th Avenue, Gucci, Tory Burch, Jimmy Choo nebo Louis Vuitton. V obchodním centru najdete také spoustu restauací a kaváren, včetně již zmíněného Starbene Café. Mall od San Juan je otevřené denně od 9 do 22.hodin.
